{"item":{"status":"visible","url":"\/2012\/02\/17\/ui-fail-wundermap\/","trash":"","name":"ui-fail-wundermap","parent":"","title":"UI Design Fail: Wunderground's wundermap page","date":"2012-02-17 11:53:03","filepath":"posts\/20001302_ui-fail-wundermap.xml.json","type":"post","content":"The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/wundermap\/\">Wundermap<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wunderground.com\">Wunderground.com<\/a> is amazing, but the web page layout is atrocious. \u00a0Here's an quick critique of the map page:\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_1304\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"300\" caption=\"Wundermap\"]<a href=\"http:\/\/www.8bitrobot.com\/media\/uploads\/2012\/02\/wundermap_crit.jpg\"><img class=\"size-medium wp-image-1304 \" title=\"wundermap has a bad user experience design\" src=\"http:\/\/www.8bitrobot.com\/media\/uploads\/2012\/02\/wundermap_crit_sm-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"wundermap has a bad user experience design\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a>[\/caption]\n\n \n\nThere are redundant menus, redundant search bars, and a massive header advertisement at the top. \u00a0All these are aligned vertically pushing the main content, the map, below the bottom of the page (the <em>\"fold\"<\/em> in newspaper speak). \u00a0This shrinks the map to only <strong>36 percent<\/strong> of the overall page! \u00a0Scandalous!\n\nIt appears the web developer for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/wundermap\/\">Wundermap<\/a> is taking design hints from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.weather.com\">Weather.com<\/a>,\u00a0is one of the web sites on my mental <em>User Experience Design shit list<\/em>. \u00a0Behold:\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_1303\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"300\" caption=\"Weather.com\"]<a href=\"http:\/\/www.8bitrobot.com\/media\/uploads\/2012\/02\/weathercom_crit.jpg\"><img class=\"size-medium wp-image-1303 \" title=\"weather.com has a bad user interface design\" src=\"http:\/\/www.8bitrobot.com\/media\/uploads\/2012\/02\/weathercom_crit_sm-300x157.jpg\" alt=\"weather.com has a bad user interface design\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" \/><\/a>[\/caption]\n\n \n\nVisitors should not be required to scroll to view data, but it appears the designers at <a href=\"weather.com\">Weather.com<\/a> didn't get that memo.\n\nStill, Wundermap is awesome enough that I can forgive a bit of blight just so I can monitor the weather stations in San Francisco. \u00a0Put a fork in Weather.com because that site is done."}}
